Retreat draws writers from 5 states

Fifteen writers from five states gathered in Piggott recently for the Summer Writers’ Retreat at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center.

Pat Carr of Fayetteville served as mentor.  She has published 16 books, including The Woman in the Mirror, which won the prestigious Iowa Fiction Award, and Death of a Confederate Colonel, which won both the PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists and Novelists) Southwest Fiction Award and John Estes Cooke Civil War Fiction Award.

Library summer concert series kicks off tonight

Summer is already heating up at the Craighead County Jonesboro Public Library.

The annual summer concert series kicks off at 6:30 tonight with performances by Gary Gazaway and Lisa Ahia.  They’ll be accompanied by Joy Sanford and David Eckert.

Free teacher workshop to be held at Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum

Teachers looking to add in-service credit hours are invited to attend a free professional development workshop Tuesday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center in Piggott.

The workshop’s theme is “The Hemingway Connection” and will focus on Ernest Hemingway’s connection to the Pfeiffer family of Piggott along with his contribution to Arkansas’s literary legacy.

The workshop will include a program on the Hemingway-Pfeiffer connection, a tour of the site and hands-on activities.

Mike Dollins "Cruizing" to Bluesday Tuesday

 

For tonight's Bluesday Tuesday concert in Newport, KASU Radio brings back Mike Dollins and the Cruize Brothers.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. at the Newport Country Club, 703 Walker Dr., and is free to the public. KASU will pass the hat for the band.

Levon Helm documentary to debut at TheArtsAt311

 

TheArtsAt311 will host the Arkansas premiere of Ain’t in It for My Health: A film about Levon Helm on Wednesday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m.

Helm, who was the drummer for The Band, was born in Elaine, AR, and grew up in Turkey Scratch.

The film, directed by Jacob Hatley, documents the making of Helm’s first studio album in 25 years, the Grammy Award-winning Dirt Farmer  and the subsequent resurgence of his career that continued until his death of cancer on April 19, 2012.
