Caprice kicks off Jazz Thursday concert series

 

KASU Radio is about to jazz things up in Downtown Jonesboro.

Beginning January 24 at 6;30 p.m. the station will launch a new year of expanded jazz concerts at The Arts @311 located at 311 South Church St.

The series, which will be held the fourth Thursday evening now through October, will begin with two performances by Caprice.  The five-member local ensemble is comprised of young musicians who studied in the ASU Music Department’s Jazz Studies program.

Arkansas Symphony Orchestra to perform at Fowler Center

 

The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will kick off the Fowler Center’s Riceland Distinguished Performance Series at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 29.

The concert, featuring works by Rossini, Stravinsky, Tchiakovsky and Vaughan Williams, will be conducted by ASO Music Director Phillip Mann.

Spring Writers' Retreat announced

The Spring 2013 Writers’ Retreat at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center in Piggott will be held March 21 through 23.

The retreat will offer writers the opportunity to work under the direction of a professional mentor.

Registration is $150 by March and $175 thereafter, lunch and breaks are included.

Dr. Rob Lamm, director of English Education at Arkansas State University, will serve as the retreat mentor.  He has also served as director of the NEA Writing Project and edited the literary magazine Arkansas Anthology.

"American Pickers" coming to Arkansas

 

Your trash could be the History Channel’s treasure.

Mike and Frank from “American Pickers” are coming to Arkansas.

According to an announcement posted Monday on their Facebook page, the pair is “heading down to the Natural State.”  They’re asking fans to submit their tips for the “biggest piles of rusty gold in your neck of the woods—from the Ozarks to the Mississippi and everything in between.”

Peter Jankovic Ensemble bringing Latin flair to The Ritz

 

Tickets are now on sale for the next event in the Arts Council of Mississippi County’s 2012-2013 Series.

The Petar Jankovic Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, January 25, at The Ritz.

Jankovic is an international award-winning classical guitarist and a faculty members at the prestigious Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music.

Fan favorite returning to Bluesday Tuesday

A crowd favorite is returning to the Newport Country Club.

The Jess Hoggard Band will perform at the next KASU Bluesday Tuesday on January 8 at 7 p.m.

The band is comprised of experienced bluesmen from Little Rock and Jonesboro and includes Charles Woods on guitar, Ivan Yarbrough on bass and Cecil Parker on drums.  They’ll be joined by singer/guitarist Jess Hoggard of Jonesboro.

KASU Manager Mike Doyle said the band was such a hit in June of 2011, “concertgoers told us they wanted to hear them again.”
