JPD: Fight was real, $100 bill was not | Crime
Jonesboro police investigating a fight between three men say the punches were real; but, the money was not.
Officers arrested 26-year-old Steve D. Daniels and charged him with forgery and battery after they say he beat up another man.
Just before 1:30 Thursday morning officers were dispatched to a fight in the 1100-block of Burke.
When they arrived they found 27-year-old Jeffrey Chaplain’s face covered in blood, his right eye was swollen shut and blood was coming out of his ear.
Chaplain told police he was asleep on the couch and was awakened by three men hitting him in the face.
An officer responding to the fight call reported spotting two shirtless men walking away from the area. One of the men, later identified as Daniels, reportedly had “blood on his face, hands and jeans.”
The officer took Daniels and his companion, 18-year-old Jeffrey Nix, into custody.
While searching Daniels the officer reported finding a counterfeit $100 bill. Daniels told the officer a man named “Clarence” had asked if he could make change for the bill, then left it in his possession without getting his money.
Daniels was charged with first degree forgery and battery in the third degree.
Nix was cited for nonpayment of fines. Both were taken to the Craighead County Detention Center where at last report they were still detained.
