Mr. J.R. Laird, 84, of Jonesboro died Saturday at Searcy. He was born May 18, 1928 at Monett, the son of George Curtis and Evelyn (Goff) Laird. 

Mr. Laird was a heavy equipment operator for Greenfield Construction until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the International Operating Engineers Union Local 324. Mr. Laird was a member of the General Baptist Church in Jonesboro, and enjoyed fishing and working on small engines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Evelyn Laird.

Mr. Laird is survived by his wife, Omagene (Loftin) Laird of Jonesboro; three sons, Danny Laird of Crosby, Texas, Dale Stokes of Newport, and Johnny Laird of Princeton, Kentucky; three daughters, Janice Helmcamp of New Caney, Texas, Jackie DelaRosa of New Caney, Texas, and Glinda Stokes of Jonesboro; four brothers, J.L., Lester, Dale, and Bill Laird; seven sisters, Francis Laird, Ruby McDaniel, OmaLee McDaniel, Sue Smith, Linda Jensen, Glenda Evans, and Maria Laird; ten grandchildren; and several great and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Watson Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home Monday evening, 6-8 p.m.
