Fundraiser held to benefit Miracle League project

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Local bikers organized a weekend fundraiser to help build a ball field and playground for special needs children.

The event was held Saturday at the Southside Softball Complex in Jonesboro.

The city hopes to build several facilities there that include a ball field with a rubberized surface and put in at least 28 pieces of handicap-accessible playground equipment.

Every penny raised Saturday went to the Miracle League project.

Sharron Turman, the city's softball coordinator, says organizers hoped to collect as much money as possible.

"(It's a) $1.3 million project," Turman said. "We've got a lot of money to raise. We're looking to open it in Fall of 2013, so we're really out there beating the bushes."

Turman says the fundraising efforts are ongoing.

Anyone wanting to donate to the project can call her  at 870-882-5430, or  contact the Jonesboro Parks & Recreation Department at 870-933-4604.
