JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program hosted a celebration at the Craighead County Health Department in Jonesboro for mothers in honor of the 20th annual World Breastfeeding Month.
A program was given on a variety of different topics mothers encounter.
Lactation consultant for St. Bernard's, Sherry Rickard, says new moms often don't realize the many benefits to breastfeeding for both mother and child. "It lowers the risk of osteoporosis, ovarian cancer, and pre menopausal breast cancer." Rickard said.
Rickard says breastfeeding also lowers a babies risk of ear infection, sudden infant death syndrome and upper and lower respiratory viruses.
