Police investigating more cars stolen from Jonesboro area | News
JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A day after KAIT reported on a rash of car and motorcycle thefts in Jonesboro, another car and motorcycle were reported stolen.
Thursday morning the owner of a dark green 1996 Toyota Tacoma with tag number 928RLO reported his vehicle stolen. Wednesday night, a lime green 2007 Kawasaki NINJA motorcycle with tag number XP762 was reported stolen. Including those vehicles, there have been four vehicles and two motorcycles stolen in the past four days.
Brandon Evans, a resident at Stadium Place Apartments, reported his 1984 Oldsmobile stolen around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning. Evans told police he saw the car was missing from the parking lot when he went outside to leave for work.
"I came out 6 o'clock, 6:30 yesterday morning on my way to work, noticed that my car was gone, woke up a couple of my neighbors, asked if they had heard anything, seen anything over the night."
Evans said the car has a loud exhaust that would have awakened him and neighbors if the car had been started.
Evans used the car for racing on weekends.
Neighbors said they did not hear or see anything unusual.
An officer who lives in the same building as Evans told the officer who took the report that the noise from the car would have awakened him as well. The officer believed it could have been taken on a trailer.
Evans called several towing companies in search of the car. "I did call most of the wrecker places here in Jonesboro. I have a friend that works in one of the other ones and he called around as well and it was not at any of them."
According to the police report, Evans told police "the vehicle was unlocked and uses cutoff to start the car," and that "two days ago he noticed that someone had put a 46 sticker on the bottom driver side rear glass, which he took off."
Evans said the theft will not change his routine because he has another car, but he is hoping the $12,000 he put into the Oldsmobile does not go to waste.
"It's not going to affect my work, but it's just a lot of time and money I had into it that is gone now. So, I'll have to start over.
Evans said the Oldsmobile has a sticker on the window that says "RUMORRACING" in orange lettering, and ‘"nothing faster than a rumor'" in white lettering just below it.
The Arkansas tag number on the car is D3710.
The second vehicle theft on Tuesday happened at The Links apartment complex around 8 a.m. Dallas Berry reported his 1997 Chevrolet Silverado stolen.
Berry told police he had the truck keys in his possession when he discovered his truck was missing, and that a spare key was inside the truck in a magnetic key case.
Police reported there were no signs that the vehicle had been broken into or towed.
The Missouri tag number on the car is 1PT647.
Brandon Little reported the third theft, which was a motorcycle, at 6:01 p.m. Tuesday evening, also at The Links.
Brandon Little told police he discovered his "motorcycle cover lying on the ground and his bike gone" when he arrived home from work.
Little said the "handlebars on the motorcycle were locked and there was a chain lock on the back wheel."
The Arkansas tag number on the car is XO810.
Jonesboro Police said they have no suspects for any of the thefts and no evidence to suggest the thefts are connected.
Below are some tips you can use to avoid being the victim of a car thief:
- Never leave your car running unattended, even to dash into a business, store, etc.;
- Never leave any keys in the car or ignition, inside a locked garage, or in hide-a-key boxes;
- Always roll up your windows and lock the car, even if it is parked in front of your home;
- Never leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked. Put them in the trunk out of sight;
- Always park in high-traffic, well-lighted areas, when possible;
- Install a mechanical device that locks the steering wheel, column, or brakes. These devices will deter some criminals;
- Investigate the purchase of a vehicle theft tracking/security system, especially if you own one of the frequently stolen model vehicles.
